Curriculum- Week of October 7-October 13

Updated: Oct 10, 2024

Monday: One-to-one Correspondence

Materials: "10 Little Jack-O-Lanterns" book

Activity: We started the week with a focus on numeracy using the book "10 Little Jack-O-Lanterns". Using 3-D jack-o-lanterns on the pages, we practiced pointing to each one as we counted, helping reinforce the concept of cardinality—the idea that the last number we say represents the total count. This hands-on activity builds the foundation for understanding one-to-one correspondence and supports the development of strong counting skills.

Tuesday: Shape and Attributes

Materials: Shapes to hide

Activity: Today, we worked on shape identification through a fun “Where is?” shape song and game. We introduced basic shapes like circles, squares, and triangles by singing about them and trying to find the ones I had hidden. This helped connect visual shapes to their names, making learning more memorable and interactive. Singing and movement games are an engaging way to support early geometry skills!

Wednesday: Simple Visual Patterns

Materials: Q-tips and orange/black paint, cardboard to glue the house on and poke holes for the q-tips, construction paper, glue, stickers

Activity: Mid-week, we tapped into creativity by building a haunted house and then used Q-tips to create repeating patterns for decoration. This activity encouraged pattern recognition and fine motor skills as children arranged the Q-tips in AB or AAB patterns. Recognizing and creating patterns is an early math skill that strengthens their ability to see structure and predict what comes next.

Thursday: Size Comparisons- Big vs Small

Materials: Snack items of different sizes

Activity: For snack time, we dove into measurement by comparing different-sized snacks during our bat-themed activity. We used descriptive words like “long,” “short,” “big,” and “small” as we talked about the various shapes and sizes. By encouraging children to sort, compare, and discuss, we introduced the foundational concepts of measurement in a playful and delicious way!

Friday: Fractions and Half

Materials: washcloths

Activity: Today’s focus was on fractions, specifically understanding “half.” We used everyday items like washcloths to practice folding them in half, showing that two equal parts make up a whole. By physically manipulating objects, children begin to grasp the concept of equal parts, an important building block for later fraction learning.

Saturday: Musical Patterns

Materials: Instruments

Activity: We made some music as a family by using instruments to create rhythms and patterns. Clapping along, tapping drums, and shaking maracas helped introduce concepts like pattern and sequencing. Music is a fantastic tool for reinforcing math skills, as children learn to keep the beat and recognize repeating sounds, which translate well into mathematical patterns.

Sunday: Puzzles and Games

Materials: Chutes and Ladders

Activity:We ended the week with a fun family game of "Chutes and Ladders". This classic board game supports counting, number recognition, and turn-taking skills. Rolling the dice and moving spaces helped reinforce numeracy and number sense in an engaging, low-pressure way. It’s the perfect activity to tie together our week of learning!
