Monday Math Fun!
Today’s numeracy activity is all about 1-to-1 correspondence up to 10!
Materials: Colored pom poms, 10 small cups, cards numbered 1-10.
Preparation:Count out different numbers of colored pom poms from 1 to 10 (e.g., 1 red, 2 blue, 3 green, etc.). Mix all the pom poms together in a bowl or pile.
Activity: Let your child use tongs (or their hands if they prefer) to sort the pom poms by color, placing them into the small cups. As they sort, encourage them to count the pom poms out loud. Once they’ve sorted all the pom poms, your child can place the appropriate number card into the cup with the corresponding number of pom poms.
Adaptation: Make it a game with a timer or hide the pom poms around the room for a fun twist!
Tuesday Snack time + Shape fun
Materials: Die and pretzel sticks, straws or sticks outside
Activity: Roll a die and use pretzel sticks to build shapes. If you roll a 1 or 2, talk about why you can’t make a shape with just one or two sides—exploring how shapes work! Build, learn, and snack as you go. Perfect for hands-on learning with a fun twist. You can also try it with straws or sticks outside!
Wednesday Pattern hunt!
Materials: None
Activity: Today’s math goal is learning about patterns, which are things that repeat. As you go through your day, look for patterns wherever you are—at the grocery store, outside on a walk, or around the house. Talk about what makes a pattern and have fun spotting them together! No materials needed—just your eyes and curiosity!
Thursday Size Comparisons: Big vs Small
Materials: "I Wrote to the Zoo" book
Activity: Read "I Wrote to the Zoo," using fun hand gestures to emphasize size. Afterwards, explore the environment, looking for big and small objects. From sorting toys to drawing your favorite big and small animals, have a blast learning together! Keep the size talk going throughout the day!
Friday Part and Whole Exploration:
Materials: Play doh, cookie cutters, plastic knife
Activity: Use play doh to create shapes with cookie cutters and learn about halves by cutting them in two. It’s amazing to see how a whole shape can become two halves! Perfect hands-on learning for understanding fractions while being creative.
Saturday’s musical adventure:
Materials: Instruments
Activity: Exploring patterns and rhythms! Have fun experimenting with sounds using instruments and everyday objects. This week we found some fun instruments to experiment with at a playground! Music is all about patterns, and it's great practice to make your own! Whether at home or out and about, there’s always a chance to find rhythm in our day.
Sunday family fun:
Materials: Jigsaw Puzzle
Activity: It’s puzzle time! Grab a jigsaw puzzle and let’s learn while we play together! Celebrate the joy of completing the puzzle together and enjoy the time spent learning!
